Orange Shirt Day - Wear orange in observance of Truth and Reconciliation Day.
Truth and Reconciliation Day is observed on September 30 to honor residential school survivors, their families, communities and the children who never returned home. It became a national holiday in Canada in 2021. The purpose of the day is to recognize the tragic history and multi-generational impacts of the Indian residential and day school systems. It is also called Orange Shirt Day. People wear orange shirts to show solidarity and remembrance. The orange shirt symbolizes the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem. In September 2026, three children (victims of the boarding school system) were returned to the Fort Peck Reservation and their families after over 100 years. Every child matters.
