Equipment
Limited school equipment is provided for all students’ use during playground time and school hours. Basketball Hoops: Students may not dunk or grab the rims on the adaptable basketball hoops. Slides: Students may climb up or down the slides within reason. Swings: One student per swing at a time. Swinging should be done front to back with students sitting on their bottoms or stomachs. Swings should not be twisted. Sticks: Students may play with sticks on the playground in a safe manner, such as building.
Winter Weather
Students will be outside as much as possible during winter weather. No outdoor recess will be held when the temperature plus the wind chill is greater than 15 degrees below zero. The school’s weather station will be the official reference for determinations or the nearest station, if necessary. Only students with full gear will be permitted to play in the snow. Proper gear includes: hats, gloves, snow pants, boots, jackets, and scarves (if they choose).
Standing and sliding on icy areas of the playground is prohibited. Students are encouraged to stay off the ice at all times. Students may not throw snow, including snowballs, and/or ice chunks. Sledding in the winter is okay unless the hill is icy or slushy. Students bringing sleds should be sharing. Students must sit on their pockets when sledding.
If cold weather prevents students from going outside, recess will be in the gym, classrooms or other common areas.
Indoor Recess
When recess is inside you have three options: in the gym, in the multi, and in your classroom.
The gym is available at lunch recess on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.
We will do lunch recess inside our own classrooms on days the gym is not available. If a teacher has to be out of the building for an errand, she/he needs to set up with another teacher to watch their students. Teachers have recess supplies in their classrooms. When recess is in classrooms, recess supervisors will rove between classrooms.
For afternoon recess, the multi is available for use unless something else is scheduled to be in there. At that time, you would do recess in your own classrooms.
K-3 Recess Clothing
Winter
Each teacher will keep extra hats and gloves for students, as available.
Students can walk around the playground if they have boots, but no boots means you stay on the concrete.
Only students in full winter gear should be allowed to play in the snow.
As a reminder, students should go outside unless it is -15 degrees or lower.
If it is 0 or below, students should be outside in all winter gear. No exceptions. If the temperature is above zero, we should continue to encourage students to wear full gear but they can ultimately choose.
If students do not have proper gear at 0 or below, they will be kept inside and sent to the library. They will read during this time.
Proper gear includes: hats, gloves, snow pants, boots, jackets, and scarves (if they choose). Sweatshirts are not a suitable substitution for jackets.
Fall/Spring
Students must bring jackets outside if it is 40 degrees or below. Coats should be on bodies at all times past this temperature. If it is between 40-50 degrees, the teacher can make this choice, but coats should come outside with students. If it is above 50 degrees, that will be completely up to the individual duty teacher.
There is a laminated jacket for duty teachers to use for recess. If the temperature falls in a place where students should be wearing coats, it will be up to the duty teacher to hang this up so students know, especially those that get out after we go outside. Hopefully this will help solve the problems of multiple questions and arguments.
